ONGOING COLLABORATION

Continuing a decade-long partnership with Do Lab, HNZLR elevated the bar for ephemeral tension architecture by designing a floating tensile sculpture for Monolink’s headlining set in Golden Gate Park. The project built on years of trust and experimentation, culminating in a structure that merged parametric design, custom fabrication, and unconventional rigging into a singular moment of architectural suspension.

FLOATING FORM

The geometry is held by four opposing curves counterbalanced by an inverted arc loft—creating a figure that feels weightless despite its scale. Striated fabric panels, attached only along their top edge, surrender to the breeze, producing a soft, kinetic motion. The result is a form in tension with itself and its environment- alive with movement, yet held in perfect balance.

SOFT RIGGING INNOVATION

Atop the central arc, a custom net was fabricated by InCord to HNZLR’s 3D specifications. Rather than relying on visible hardware, each suspension line was fastened directly into the perimeter weave of the net itself, securing under load, similar to the logic of a “Chinese finger trap.” This approach marked a subtle but radical shift in rigging philosophy, reinforcing the illusion of weightlessness while strengthening the entire system.

ADVANCING MATERIAL EXPERIMENTS

HNZLR introduced the process of pigmenting translucent mesh, sourcing a wider, and more durable mesh material suitable for the project conditions, then equipped the fabrication team with parametrically generated dimension layouts.

SYNESTHETIC IMPACT

The final piece stretched like a burst of color through the trees- its arcs and gradients catching light and movement in equal measure. It resonated not only with the audience but with Monolink himself, echoing the emotional tone of his music in architectural form. The Slice signals a new phase in HNZLR and Do Lab’s evolving dialogue—one marked by deepened creativity, shared risk, and the pursuit of structural poetry.

CINEMATIC CONCEPT RENDERING

CINEMATIC CONCEPT RENDERING

HNZLR presents live Unreal Engine scenes during client reviews, alongside high-fidelity CAD models with custom aesthetic display modes. These real-time, in-house visuals are instrumental in confirming concept viability and articulating design intent to adjacent teams.

Clients gain agency by interacting with evolving environments: suggesting prop adjustments, evaluating lighting scenarios, and experiencing spatial transformations live on call.

HNZLR is artistic vision meeting technical execution.

PARAMETRIC DESIGN

PARAMETRIC CAD

HNZLR routinely evolves a simple sketch into flexible and optimized parametric scripts that generate the entire stage geometry from a just a handful of control points. This simplifies the client-facing CAD presentation and allows us to iterate extensively, yielding efficient and emergent results in ways not possible through traditional modeling practices. Parameters are carefully selected with sweet-spot value ranges, fine tuned for reviews, with relevant dimensions automatically calculated.

TECHNICAL DRAWINGS

AUTOMATED FABRICATION

HNZLR’s parametric approach extends seamlessly into fabrication. When working with multiplicity- whether in panels, members, or mesh cuts- efficiency hinges on automating layout and nesting workflows. To avoid redundant manual labor during iterative revisions, HNZLR developed a custom Grasshopper script tailored to Do Lab’s fabrication pipeline. These sample outputs demonstrate how the system generates dimensioned layouts directly from the evolving design geometry, ensuring clarity, consistency, and speed at every stage.
